Totally Woman

When I wrote the article titled "A Virtuous Woman; Whom would Find One?" I offered to analyze later chapter 31 of Proverbs which contains the praise to a virtuous woman that I briefly outlined that day. Now when lots of girls are ending high school and getting ready to go to college seemed appropriate to keep my promise to say; you guys are about to become real women!

When talking about virtue we always associate the term with purity and long hours of prayer. It seems like the term has little or nothing to do with the cosmopolitan woman of now days that gets a career and competes with men to achieve high levels at work; that one who can face life alone and raise her children without the help of their father. The reality is very different and Bible is clear on this.

Proverbs 31:10-31

10. Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.

There was a time when women could be sold or disclosed as part of a business alliance to the man who would marry them. She would be checked as an animal for sale and if she was beautiful and healthy enough a business in which her feelings, desires and dreams did not count would be trade. Her worth was to be the guarantee of a partnership between families. As such alliances were trade early in life women were raised to be what their husbands expected them to be.

Today's woman in almost every country around this world is educated to be what she expects of herself. With very few exceptions, she has the right to choose her partner and does it according to her feelings. Of course, even today beauty makes a difference but also being knowledgeable and even the nature of her soul counts. I do not mean by this long hours of prayer, but the willingness of spirit and gentleness of character. Surprisingly for those who are not used to reading the scriptures the worth of women today is no different than that of yesteryear.

11. The heart of her husband doth safely trust to her; so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Back in those days loyalty, fidelity, living in dignity were already required issue and its demand went beyond what is expected of us today. At that time people traveled by foot or by beasts so that when a man left on a trip it would take him years to return. His wife then administered home and the business of her husband who expected, when returning, to find everything in order and as much or more prosperous than when he left. The education of children in those days was similar to that of divorced women and single mothers today. The presence of the father was only an image of authority and sometimes only a vague remembrance. She should also abstain from sex along the years he spent out even if she did not know if he was still alive. As today's his faithfulness did not count because in this regard who has a honor to keep are women. In what to men refers the more experienced the  better he is and this is an experience women appreciate them to held. Those who have a religion in which man remains as chaste as women know better than anyone what I mean.

13. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands  she planteth a vineyard.

17. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19. She layeth her hands to the spindle and her hands hold the distaff.

Virtue implied in those days, as today, to be trained in every line of work. This woman was a great artisan and a wise farmer who also trade and got good profit from what she produced. She knew how to find good deals like the woman of today that goes store to store in search of the best quality and the best prices. The greatest part is that she was always available to meet her business as we do today that never turn the phone off just in case an emergency occurs.

20. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

We have spoken many times about the great spiritual growth which reaches the soul of who practice charity. Since she is also generous must be a noble soul.

21. She is not afraid of the snow for her household, for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She is a wary woman who knows how to anticipate to the circumstances.

22. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

Silk and purple dressed the nobles, gods, kings. This statement means that she is excellently reputed. Her worth is such that everyone trusts on her husband for being married to her. A jerk does not fit in the bed of a virtuous woman so that he is given the respectability of a sage because only a great man enjoys the company of a woman like her.

24. She maketh fine linen and sellth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

Honesty is her style; she knows that the prosperity of her family depends on the good relationship established in her business.

26. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She is understanding and forgives your mistakes, when she admonishes you she does it to instruct not to humiliate.

27. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

She takes care of her body with the enthusiasm of today’s women not only because she wants to look nice but because gluttony as all vices involves the waste of money. She knows that what she overeats today could alleviate her hunger tomorrow.

28. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29. Many daughters have done virtuously: but thou excellest them all.

30. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord she shall be praised.  

31. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

As result of her behavior she is loved, respected and admired of those who are part of her environment. The nobility of her soul goes beyond her beauty and as response she harvests goodness in the hands of all those she serves.

She serves God faithfully and that is her best attribute.

This compliment to women is also a guide to action. Who was not raised to be it can achieve virtuosity by herself acquiring the knowledge and applying it to her own life. One thing you can be sure of is that you will get so much praise as the lady of the Bible. Virtue never go out of style.

Toda Una Mujer

Cuando escribí el artículo que titule “mujer virtuosa quien la hallara” les ofrecí que más adelante analizaría el capítulo 31 del libro de Proverbios que contiene el elogio a la mujer virtuosa que ese día esboce someramente. Ahora que muchas chicas están saliendo de la secundaria y empezando la universidad me pareció pertinente cumplir mi promesa para decir de alguna manera; ¡Eres toda una mujer!

Cuando hablamos de virtud siempre asociamos el término con pureza y largas horas de oración. Pareciera que el término tiene poco o nada que ver con la mujer de hoy que obtiene una carrera y compite con hombres por alcanzar altos puestos laborales. Esa que es capaz de enfrentar la vida en solitario y educar a sus hijos sin la presencia del padre. La realidad es muy distinta y la biblia es clara al respecto.

10. Mujer virtuosa ¿quien la hallara? Porque su estima sobrepasa largamente a la de las piedras preciosas.

Hubo una época en que la mujer podía ser vendida al hombre que la desposaría o  entregada como parte de una alianza comercial. Se le revisaba como a un animal en venta y si era lo suficientemente bella y sana se transaba el negocio en el que sus sentimientos, deseos y sueños no contaban. Su valía estaba en ser la garantía de una alianza entre familias. Como esas alianzas se transaban temprano en la vida la mujer era educada para ser lo que su marido esperaba que ella fuera.

La mujer de hoy en casi todos los países del mundo es educada para ser aquello que ella espera de sí misma. Con muy contadas excepciones tiene derecho a elegir su pareja y lo hace de acuerdo con sus sentimientos. Claro que aun hoy la belleza cuenta pero también la preparación y la naturaleza del alma. No me refiero a largas horas de oración sino la buena disposición de espíritu y a la mansedumbre de carácter. Sorprendentemente para quienes no acostumbran leer las escrituras la valía de la mujer de hoy no es distinta que la de antaño.

11. El corazón de su marido está en ella confiado y no carecerá de ganancias.

12. Le da ella bien y no mal todos los días de su vida.

Ya en esos días la lealtad, la fidelidad, el obrar dignamente eran tema trillado y la exigencia iba más allá de lo que hoy se espera de nosotras. En aquel tiempo los viajes se hacían a pie o en bestias de manera que cuando el hombre partía tardaba años en volver. La mujer administraba entonces la casa y los negocios de su marido que esperaba encontrar al regreso todo en orden y tanto o más prospero que como lo dejo. La educación de los hijos era en esos días parecida a la de la mujer divorciada y la madre soltera de hoy. La presencia del padre era solo una imagen de autoridad y un recuerdo a veces vago en la memoria. Además ella debía abstenerse sexualmente aunque pasaran años y ella no supiera si él seguía con vida. Tal como en nuestros días la fidelidad de él no contaba ya que en ese respecto quien tiene un honor que cuidar son las mujeres, para el hombre entre más experimentado mejor y esa es una experiencia que las mujeres agradecemos que posea. Quienes tenemos una religión en la que el hombre se mantiene tan casto como las mujeres sabemos mejor que nadie a que me refiero.

13. Busca lana y lino y con voluntad trabaja con sus manos.

14. Es como nave de mercader; trae su pan de lejos.

15. Se levanta de noche y da comida a su familia y ración a sus criadas.

16. Considera la heredad y la compra; y planta viña del fruto de sus manos;

17. Ciñe de fuerza sus lomos; y esfuerza sus brazos.

18. Ve que van bien sus negocios; su lámpara no se apaga de noche.

19. Aplica su mano al huso y sus manos a la rueca.

Virtud implicaba en esos días, tal como hoy la preparación en todos los campos. Esta mujer era toda una artesana y una gran agricultora que además sabia comerciar y obtener buenas ganancias de lo que ella misma producía. Sabia encontrar buenas ofertas como la mujer de hoy que va de mercado en mercado en busca de lo mejor y de los mejores precios. Lo más grandioso es que estaba disponible a toda hora para atender sus asuntos así como hoy no apagamos el celular porque pudiera ocurrir una emergencia.

20. Alarga su mano al pobre y extiende sus manos al menesteroso,

Hemos hablado muchas veces acerca del gran crecimiento espiritual que aporta al alma de quien la ejerce la caridad. Dado que ella es generosa debe ser además un alma noble.

21. No tiene temor de la nieve por su familia; porque toda su familia esta vestida de ropas dobles.

Es una mujer precavida que sabe adelantarse a las circunstancias.

22. Ella se hace tapices; De lino y purpura es su vestido.

23. su marido es conocido en las puertas cuando se sienta con los ancianos de la tierra.

De lino y purpura se vestía a los nobles, a los dioses, a los reyes. Esta acotación se refiere a que ella goza de una excelente reputación. Su valía es tal que todos confían en su marido por ser casado con ella. Un patán no cabe en la cama de una mujer virtuosa así que a él se le concede la respetabilidad de un sabio porque solo un gran hombre goza de la compañía de una mujer como ella. 

24. Hace telas y vende; y da cintas al mercader.

25. Fuerza y honor son su vestidura y se ríe de lo por venir.

La honestidad es su estilo, ella sabe bien que de la buena relación que establece en sus negocios depende la prosperidad de su familia.

26. Abre la boca con sabiduría; y la ley de clemencia está en su lengua.

Sabe comprender y perdonar tus errores, cuando te amonesta lo hace por instruirte no para humillarte.

27. Considera los caminos de su casa, y no come el pan de balde.

Ella cuida su cuerpo con el celo de la mujer de hoy no solo porque quiere verse bien sino porque la gula como todos los vicios implica el despilfarro de dinero. Sabe que lo que come de más hoy podría mitigar su hambre mañana.

28. Se levantan sus hijos y la llaman bienaventurada; y su marido también la alaba.

29. Muchas mujeres hicieron el bien; mas tu sobrepasas a todas.

30. Engañosa es la gracia y vana la hermosura; la mujer que teme a Jehová esa será alabada.

31. Dadle del fruto de sus manos; y alábenla en la puerta sus hechos.

El resultado de su conducta, es amor, respeto y admiración de los que  forman parte de su entorno. La nobleza de su alma excede su belleza física y gracias a ello cosecha bien de manos de todos aquellos a los que sirve.

Desde luego ella sirve a Dios sin desmayar y ese es su mejor atributo.

Este elogio a la mujer es además una guía de acción. Quien no fue educada para serlo puede alcanzar la virtuosidad adquiriendo por sí misma el conocimiento y aplicándolo en su vida. Si de algo pueden estar seguras es que obtendrán tantas alabanzas como la dama de la biblia. La virtud no pasara de moda jamás.
